About Yahoo

Yahoo was acquired by Verizon in June 2017 for 4.48 billion, a fraction of its peak value of 125 billion in 2000. Yahoo had been the dominant internet company in the late 1990s. CEO Marissa Mayer was hired in 2012 to turn around the company but could not reverse declining revenue. Yahoo missed multiple opportunities, including the chance to buy Google for 1 million in 1998 and Facebook for 1 billion in 2006. Two massive data breaches affecting over 1 billion accounts were revealed in 2016. Verizon reduced the acquisition price by 350 million after the breaches. Yahoo was merged with AOL under the Oath brand, later renamed Verizon Media. Verizon Media was sold to Apollo Global Management in 2021 for 5 billion.
