Proterra
About Proterra
Proterra, an electric bus and battery manufacturer, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on August 7, 2023. The company had been valued at 1.6 billion after going public via SPAC in 2021. Proterra benefited from federal grants under the Biden administration. However, the company struggled with production costs and supply chain issues. Phoenix Motorcars acquired Proterra transit bus business for 8 million. Volvo acquired the battery business. The case was politically sensitive because Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg had promoted Proterra. The bankruptcy demonstrated that government support and favorable policy cannot overcome fundamental economic challenges. The electric bus market has proven more difficult than anticipated due to high upfront costs and infrastructure requirements.
