PG&E
About PG&E
Pacific Gas and Electric filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on January 29, 2019, facing approximately 30 billion in wildfire liability. PG&E equipment had sparked the 2017 Northern California wildfires and the 2018 Camp Fire that killed 85 people and destroyed the town of Paradise. The company was convicted of felony for a 2010 gas pipeline explosion in San Bruno that killed 8 people. PG&E emerged from bankruptcy in July 2020 with a reorganization plan funded by a 23 billion financing package. The utility faced ongoing wildfire risks and implemented rolling blackouts during high wind events. PG&E pleaded guilty to 84 counts of involuntary manslaughter. The bankruptcy highlighted the financial risks of climate change for utility companies in fire prone areas.
