Gold Gym
About Gold Gym
Gold Gym International filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on May 4, 2020. Founded in 1965 in Venice California, Gold Gym was an iconic fitness brand. The company had been acquired by TRT Holdings in 2004 for 160 million. The COVID pandemic closed gyms worldwide. Gold Gym had approximately 700 locations, mostly franchised. RSG Group, a German fitness company, acquired Gold Gym out of bankruptcy for approximately 100 million. The acquisition preserved the brand and most franchised locations. Gold Gym emerged from bankruptcy in August 2020. The fitness industry consolidation accelerated during COVID, with several chains filing for bankruptcy. The case illustrates how franchised business models can preserve brand value even when the parent company fails.
