About BlackBerry
BlackBerry wrote off 934 million in unsold inventory in September 2013. The company had once dominated the smartphone market with over 50 percent US market share. CEO Thorsten Heins launched BlackBerry 10 in January 2013, but the new operating system failed to attract developers. Fairfax Financial Holdings considered taking BlackBerry private but instead invested 1 billion. John Chen replaced Heins as CEO. Chen pivoted BlackBerry from hardware to software and services. The company stopped making phones in 2016, licensing the brand to third party manufacturers. BlackBerry survived by focusing on enterprise security and automotive software. The BlackBerry collapse was one of the most dramatic falls in technology history. At its peak in 2008, BlackBerry was worth 80 billion.
